Jazz & Poetry At DIA this Friday!
Alfredo de La Fe Friday December 17th at 7 & 8:30pm
Cuban born, New York based superstar violinist Alfredo de La Fe is a musical legend and one of the founders of Latin Jazz and Salsa music. A true virtuoso, de La Fe is known for his innovative approach and vision, fusing jazz with a variety of Cuban rhythms including Rumba, Cha Cha, Mambo, and Danzon. Performing with Alfredo de La Fe are his Cuban Allstars, featuring Nachito Herrera on piano, Raul Pineda on drums, master percussionist Jesus Diaz, and Armando Gola on bass.
Jamaal May is a Cave Canem Fellow, Callaloo Writing Workshop Participant and student in Warren Wilson’s MFA for writers. His work has appeared in or is forthcoming from Callaloo, Indiana Review, The Collagist, Verse Daily, NPR and WJR760 among other magazines, anthologies and broadcasts. May has received a scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, an International Publication Prize from Atlanta Review, a Pushcart nomination, and he was a finalist for the 2010 Ruth Lilly Fellowship. May is also a two-time Detroit Poetry Slam Champion and two-time Midwest Regional Poetry Slam Champion. He has been teaching poetry in Detroit Public Schools through the Inside Out Literary Arts Project since 2007.
Art Of The Masters Workshop
Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM to 3:00 PMv at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (315 East Warren Avenue Detroit, MI 48201) Experience the exhibit, Art of the Masters: A Survey of African American Images, 1980 – 2000, with teaching artist Ziwadi Majiisa. This workshop will focus on Kwanzaa gifts with cards, wrapping paper, book marks, dolls, mixed media & assemblage. Free with museum admission.
The Russell Bazaar is now open 7 days a week!
Beginning Friday, November 26th, the Russell Bazaar will be open 7 days a week to accommodate holiday shoppers. The Russell Bazaar, an indoor shopping center in the iconic Russell Industrial Center complex, is typically open Friday through Sunday, but will be opening their doors everyday during the holiday shopping season.
The Russell Bazaar is home to 150 locally owned shops selling clothing, accessories, home decor, electronics, and gifts. As many of the shops offer custom goods produced by shop-owners, they attract shoppers looking for original unique pieces. The Russell Bazaar also features beautiful artwork from some of Detroit’s most respected artists and skilled craftsmen.
The Holiday shopping hours at the Russell Bazaar:
Monday- Thursday 12-8pm
Friday- Saturday 10-9pm
Sunday : 11-6pm.
Christmas Eve: 10am-7pm
New Year’s Eve: 10am-4pm
The Russell Bazaar will be returning to their regular schedule beginning January 2, 2011:
