National Trust Diversity Scholarship Program Applications Now Being Accepted
The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Diversity Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for the 2011 National Preservation Conference, to be held in Buffalo, New York, October 19-22, 2011.
Applications must be submitted electronically by Wednesday, June 1, 2011.
The Program provides financial assistance to community leaders from diverse social, economic, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds to attend the National Preservation Conference. Through interactive sessions, presentations, informal gatherings, and tours of the host city and surrounding areas, participants will learn the necessary tools to strengthen their commitment and effectiveness in preserving historic places and revitalizing communities.
The National Trust seeks culturally diverse applicants whose attendance at the Conference will benefit their communities and whose commitment to historic preservation will be reinforced by their participation. Recipients will have an opportunity to express their perspectives during the Conference and to take advantage of National Trust programs after the Conference.

African Liberation Day
Detroit City Council Member JoAnn Watson and the 2011 African Liberation Day (ALD) Committee requests your presence at the opening activities at Cobo Center on Friday, May 27, 2011 for Detroit’s African Liberation Weekend. Opening Activities begin at 6:00 (doors opens at 5:00).
This year’s theme: “S.O.S. Emergency at Home (The Motherland & Abroad” honoring the Life & Spirit of Queen Mother (Nana Ama Manan II) E. Malkia Brantuo. Special guests, Pan Africans, and supporters from across the nation have been invited to this year’s African Liberation Weekend activities.
Friday’s program includes Keynote addresses from Dr. Maulana Karenga, Dr. Claud Anderson, and Professor Herb Boyd. Special presentations include African drummers and dancers.
Friday’s ALD General Admission is $10. Advance tickets currently are available.
34th Annual St. Patrick Irish Festival
The St. Patrick Senior Center would like to invite you to the 34th Annual St. Patrick Irish Festival that will be held on Sunday, June 12th from 1:00 to 9:00 PM, at 58 Parsons Street (behind the DSO). This year, UAW President Bob King is serving as the Honorary Chair for the Center’s major fundraiser that is also Metro Detroit’s Largest Celebration of Irish Heritage.
Like every festival before, the event promises fun and excitement for the entire family. There’s nothing like the St. Pat’s festival, which draws our friends from the city of Detroit and its suburbs.
It happens indoors and outside at St. Pat’s and features:
· Over 200 entertainers: singers, musicians, and dancers
· Amazingly-priced authentic food and drink
· Kids Carnival with games and inflatable’s
Admission is only $3.00 – and all $3 tickets purchased will be entered into a drawing to win $1,000, $300 or $200.
The center also is selling $100 Dollar Tickets with a 1st Prize award of $10,000, a 2nd Prize award of $3,000, a 3rd Prize award of $2,000 and 10 Prizes of $500. For tickets or information, call St. Pat’s at (313) 833-7080.
