August 7, 2011 Leave a comment

Do you still have nagging questions about the changes that are included in the proposed Charter? Do you need more clarity on the effects these changes will have on you and your neighborhood?

DetCharter is teaming up with the McDougall Hunt Citizens’ District Council to help answer some of these questions. The McDougall Hunt CDC has arranged a community presentation for the residence in their neighborhood but have generously offered to host anyone interested in learning more about the proposed charter.

Please join us Thursday, August 11th from 6 – 8 pm @ the Franklin Wright Settlements (3360 Charlevois @ Elmwood).

This will be the first in a series of presentations we plan to give in the upcoming months leading up to the November vote.

If you have any questions about the presentation please contact us @ info@detcharter.com . no need to register or RSVP; just show up, enjoy the presentation and ask plenty of questions.

We hope to see you there,
The DetCharter Team

Ride With Fender Bender Detroit Under the Moon

August 7, 2011 Leave a comment

We’ll ride around Detroit under the light of the full moon and skip the heat of the sun.

This Fender Bender Detroit ride is open to everyone as we try to raise awareness and have fun riding bikes in the night.

August 13th

Meet us at the corner of Cass & Forest, in front of the UU Church (First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit).

Meet at 10:00pm, ride at 10:30pm.

Rain or (moon)Shine

Bring your bike and your friends!  Helmets are cool, protect your head!  If you don’t have a helmet, know that your life is worth more than the price of a helmet.

The moon will be bright, (hopefully it’s not cloudy) but it is still required by law that you have a front white light and a rear red reflector.  Flashing red light is a bonus for safety as well.

A bicycle or an electric personal assistive mobility device being operated on a roadway between 1/2 hour after sunset and 1/2 hour before sunrise shall be equipped with a lamp on the front which shall emit a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the front and with a red reflector on the rear which shall be visible from all distances from 100 feet to 600 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of head lamps on a motor vehicle. A lamp emitting a red light visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear may be used in addition to the red reflector.

Bright and/or reflective clothing is rad, too.  Tape a flashlight to your handlebars, ziptie a reflector to the back of your bike, it doesn’t have to look fancy, just make sure you can see and be seen!

If you never ride at night, this is a great opportunity to try it out in a comfortable setting.  We can also match you up with someone willing to ride by your place so you don’t have to ride alone to the meeting spot, and have someone ride back to the same area with you following the ride.  Send us a message, fenderbenderdetroit[at]gmail[dot]com and we can help set something up.  RSVP on facebook.

We are currently working on a route for the ride so let us know where you would like to go! We can try to work it out that we might go through your neighborhood, so please comment with any suggestions.  We will end the ride, where it begins, between Midnight and Midnight-thirty.

Ride safe and see you soon!

“Be Me”

August 7, 2011 Leave a comment

The Knight Foundation launched BME (pronounced “Be Me”), a first-of-its-kind effort to celebrate, support, and connect black men and teens across Detroit doing big and small things for our community.  Click here for the press release.

Here’s how BME works: during the next 2 months, all Detroiters will submit individual stories that recognize black men and teens making a difference for others in the community; after we gather many hundreds of stories, we’ll celebrate everyone and showcase some of the community’s favorites; then, we’ll ask this vibrant network of black males, “What else might you do in your community?”  Knight Foundation will support the community’s favorite ideas for impactful, engaging projects.
