DCH PRINTING!
Contact: kevinzli@umich.edu
Project Summary: We provide workshops at Detroit Community High which teach students the process of screen printing and the creation of a business model. Students learn to redesign the school’s logo, create their school’s own clothing brand, and supply end products to their local community.
How will you use SOUP grant funding towards the realization of your project? The students have already created a test batch of shirts and posters. We plan on using the resources to build a light box, and buy additional supplies such as screens, shirts, ink, and photo emulsion. The light box is necessary for the process of screen printing to be self-sufficient at Detroit Community High.
Why does this project matter to the Detroit Community?
From working with students in Brightmoor, we noticed that there was always an emphasis on leaving. Outside of the few afterschool sports, most students did not have a reason to stay and the sense of community was lackluster. We want to help change this. We want to educate students, help them develop new skills, and work together with other students/teacher/administration. By helping students design their own brand and logo, we want the students to take pride in their own work and community, and develop their own identity.
SOUP is…
- a collaborative situation
- a public dinner
- a platform for connection
- a theatrical environment
- a democratic experiment in micro-funding
- a relational hub bringing together various creative communities
- a forum for critical but accessible discussion
- an opportunity to support creative people in Detroit
