ProsperUS Applications Due Today!

January 28, 2013 Leave a comment
Vanguard Community Development Corporation is accepting applications for ProsperUS Detroit Entrepreneur Classes. Classes are scheduled to begin February 2013.

DESCRIPTION of PROSPERUS DETROIT:
ProsperUS Detroit is a place-based entrepreneur training and micro-lending program. Different from other small business training programs in Detroit, ProsperUS will partner with community-based organizations to find untapped talent in neighborhoods, host entrepreneur trainings within neighborhoods and connect low-income immigrant and minority entrepreneurs with character-based lending.

ProsperUS Detroit entrepreneurs will be primarily low-income from very diverse backgrounds and, while all participants have talents and skills, most have barriers that inhibit success. To reduce barriers, trainings are conducted within neighborhoods by trainers who understand the community and the cultural histories of residents. The first round of entrepreneur training courses was launched in September 2012 in Cody Rouge, Southwest Detroit and the North End.

The ProsperUS Detroit program is modeled after the industrious and visionary work of theNeighborhood Development Center (NDC) [http://www.ndc-mn.org/] in Minneapolis/St. Paul.

REQUEST FOR APPLICANTS–PROSPERUS DETROIT PROGRAM MANAGER
SOUTHWEST HOUSING SOLUTIONS

Description of the ProsperUS Detroit Microenterprise Development Program
The ProsperUS Detroit Microenterprise Development Program is a groundbreaking initiative focused on building long-term relationships with low-income African-American and immigrant entrepreneurs, based on the highly successful model developed by the Neighborhood Development Center, located in Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota. The program offers entrepreneur training courses, coaching, access to microloans (for eligible applicants only), and assistance from free or low-cost small business technical assistance providers (e.g., legal assistance, accountants, marketing consultants, graphic designers, etc.).

This in-depth, high-touch, place-based approach is distinguished from other microenterprise development programs by its capacity to connect with, and assist, entrepreneurs in low-income, minority-based neighborhoods.

While all ProsperUS Detroit entrepreneurs have untapped talents and skills, most have barriers that inhibit success. Through highly-skilled staffing, culturally competent programming, and ongoing technical assistance, the program is designed to overcome historic obstacles for entrepreneurs so that they can begin rebuilding their neighborhoods from within.

Summer Job Opportunity For Youth

January 28, 2013 Leave a comment

The U. S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center’s (TARDEC’s) Summer Hire Program exposes aspiring high school graduates and college students to the multiple engineering and technological projects that support TARDEC’s mission.

The overall purpose of the program is to
foster interest in science and engineering career fields while highlighting the many benefits TARDEC has to offer. Students get to explore technology that could ultimately lead to the increased survivability of our troops while ensuring an agile, lethal and ready force.  We hope this experience may influence them to pursue an education within the engineering and scientific fields and upon their college graduation we hope these students will keep TARDEC in the forefront of their ultimate career choice.

The students are assigned to projects that are developed by experienced and established TARDEC Senior Engineers. The projects are selected for the Summer Hire Program based on how beneficial they will be to existing TARDEC programs while providing the students an opportunity to apply their own knowledge and skills in a professional working environment.  Serving as team leaders for the project team are TARDEC Junior Engineers, which mainly consist of engineering interns or college engineering co-ops. The Junior Engineers have an opportunity to receive firsthand experience in project management and team leadership, a trait that could be crucial to long-term management success.  The Junior Engineers, along with their summer hire teammates, are responsible for regularly reporting project status and accomplishments to their respective Senior Engineers.
