Important Section 8 Information – Ann Arbor Housing Commission Waitlist

August 12, 2012 Leave a comment

The Ann Arbor Housing Commission’s Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly known as Section 8) Tenant Based preapplication will open on Monday August 27, 2012 at 8:00 am until Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 8:00 am. Applicants can apply at any time during this pre-application period. After the pre-application time period is closed, 500 pre-applicants will be selected by a random lottery. These 500 pre-applicants will be reviewed to determine if the applicant is eligible for the waitlist. All other pre-applicants will be removed from the process and must apply again when the waitlist is reopened. Submission of a pre-application does not guarantee placement on the waitlist, and placement on the waitlist does not guarantee eligibility or an offer of housing. As vouchers become available, the 500 pre-applicants that have been screened for the waitlist will be notified in the order they were put on the waitlist. A full intake and eligibility determination will be completed at that time, prior to issuing a voucher.

How to Apply:

Apply online at www.a2gov.org/housingcommission from any computer with Internet access. A person with a disability may require an accommodation to have equal access to this program. If a reasonable accommodation is needed, please call (734) 794-6720 to request the specific accommodation prior to the waitlist opening.

Foreclosure Grants Available

The City of Detroit was awarded a CDBG-R grant for $9.9 million. From that grant, $1.2 million was earmarked to provide housing assistance to eligible City of Detroit residents who are at risk of losing their home through means of  foreclosure.

Southwest Housing Solutions was awarded $272,519 of that $1.2 million to distribute to struggling homeowners.  We have listed below some of the eligibility requirements for the program:

• Property must be in the City of Detroit
• Must be the legal owner of property
• Property must be your primary residence AND you must live in the home
• Mortgage delinquency status cannot exceed three (3) months of arrearages
• Property taxes must be current – (Note: there are some exceptions; call for more
details)
• Homeowner must be able to show stable income

If you, or know ANYONE who you think might qualify for this program, please have them call the Housing Opportunity Center immediately and request an Intake Package at 313.841.9641 or stop by the office and pick one up. We  have an EXTREMELY small window of opportunity to help eligible City of Detroit Residentsso it is imperative that we act quickly. Any funds that have not been used by the August 31, 2012 deadline, will be returned to the City of  Detroit and then, eventually, back to the Federal Government. Thank you for your assistance in spreading the word and please do not hesitate to call our office with any questions.

If you believe that new home construction and home ownership is the backbone of our national economy and our nation’s development, then plan on attending the Rally for Home Ownership!

On July 20, 2012, the NAHB, in conjunction with MAHB and HBAs across the state of Michigan will hold a Rally for Home Ownership in southeastern Michigan. This event is associated with the MAHB Summer Convention in Dearborn and all HBA members statewide are encouraged to attend both the summer convention and the Rally for Home Ownership. This event is being held to raise awareness of the importance of housing to Michigan’s economy and the benefits of homeownership, especially as it pertains to the renewal and rejuvenation of major cities in our state. This is a unique opportunity for BIA members to help make home ownership a top priority for policymakers by highlighting the housing challenges facing communities across America.

We expect the event will attract 500 – 700 people and will include invitations to a number of local, state and national officials — including President Obama and  Republican candidate hopeful Mitt Romney. Several have already confirmed attendance. The Detroit Rally will be the second of rallies planned for seven states between July and October, 2012.  All are being modeled after the Columbia, S.C., rally held in January. VIEW VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS HERE.

Date:  Friday, July 20, 2012
Time:  Estimated between 11 am to 1:30 pm.
Location:  Garden view Estates

The Garden view Estates, where the Rally will be held, is a great example of how terrific partnerships between city, state and federal agencies can positively impact a neighborhood and the quality of life of its residents. (Garden view Estates is located south of Joy Road, north of Tire man and east of the Southfield Freeway in the Detroit Area.
